In the 28 years (yes, 28), I have been a dispatcher, at three different centers in three different states, and all the thousands of calls I have taken, the one emotion that comes over me after helping someone, is calmness. Even if my heart is breaking because of the situation that caused that person to have to call 9-1-1, I thank my lucky stars I was there for them, and I was able to help them. If you are up for the challenge, you won’t find a more rewarding career.

“Working at the ECC is a very demanding, but highly recommended career. It took me 10 years to find it, but I have found my career. To me it’s not a job, I look forward to coming to work each day knowing that I will help many people and make a difference in someone’s moment of tragedy.”
Carenda Strawderman, Senior Communicator
“A career at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham ECC isn’t just a job, it’s a rewarding opportunity to be the vital link to a family of public safety professionals that thrive on providing excellent public safety service to the citizens and visitors of the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.”
Hunter McKenzie, Senior Communicator
“Growth, development, teamwork and professionalism are what drive the HRECC. Throughout my nearly eight year career here, I have been afforded the opportunity to be a part of something so much larger than myself. The ECC provides a well thought-out stable framework for which to build a successful career in public safety. We are an elite team that requires excellence and a can-do attitude. If you make the grade, you can join us and make a difference in someone’s life every day.”
