OUR HISTORY

The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center

The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center, (HRECC), was established and opened for operation on July 27, 2005.  This consolidated, multi-disciplined 9-1-1- Center is staffed with 52 employees and provides state of the art emergency and non-emergency communications services to the citizens of the City of Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, the towns within the county, public safety providers, and those passing through.

The HRECC is a multi-jurisdictional agency and is funded equally by the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. For more information on Harrisonburg or Rockingham County visit their websites at:

CROSS TRAINING 

 

Call Taker

  • HRECC Call Takers are trained in a variety of techniques that enable them to be able to readily handle all types of emergency and non-emergency situations. 

Law Enforcement Radio Operators

  • Law Enforcement Radio Operators are trained to maintain a status of all law enforcement units working during their shift. They are responsible for the dispatching, tracking, safety and documentation of each unit and call for service.

Fire-Rescue Radio Operators

  • Fire-Rescue Radio Operators tone and dispatch all Fire and EMS related calls for service. They maintain a status of each event and carry out all support tasks as needed.

Why is the hiring process for an HRECC position so long?

It is vitally important for the HRECC to hire the best and most qualified candidates for the job. In doing so, a multi-faceted and equitable hiring process is utilized. Steps of the process are time consuming but allow for the best candidates to become a part of our team.

Do I have to learn how to become a Communicator before I apply?

If I have experience in emergency communications will I be paid more?<br />

The HRECC has a competitive salary and candidates are evaluated for a higher starting pay rate based upon years of service in emergency communications. Download the Candidate Information Packet to learn more about salary opportunities based upon experience.

What hours to HRECC Communicators work?

Communicators are assigned to day shift (6:45 AM – 6:45 PM) or night shift (6:45 PM – 6:45 AM). Schedules are made on a 2-week basis and employees work Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday in that 2 week period. It then repeats
